The Yankee Boy Regional Conservation Association (YBRCA) announces the opportunity to serve as Alpine Hosts in the Yankee Boy Basin – Canyon Creek – Imogene Pass area this summer. This is a “roving host” position where volunteers will act as a welcoming presence who assist guests in their enjoyment of the area while protecting it's fragile ecosystems. . It is important that volunteers have a vehicle which can navigate the 4WD roads up toward Yankee Boy Basin and Imogene Pass. Duties include:

•  Ensuring that vehicles stay on prescribed routes and don't park on fragile vegetation

•  Making positive visitor contacts and providing information about human history, natural history, Leave-No-Trace and Tread Lightly ethics

•  Observing, recording, and reporting of maintenance needs

•  Completing light maintenance/resource protection tasks

•  Contacting Authorities in the case of medical emergency or other incident

•  Assisting with the maintenance of an alpine composting toilet facility

•  Having a working knowledge of Canyon Creek rules and basic Forest Service regulations

•  Informing visitors about the YBCA and it's mission

Hosts should enjoy meeting and helping people, be outgoing and friendly. Familiarity with map reading and ability to explain map features to visitors is important. Good physical conditioning and ability to work comfortably at altitudes from 9-11,000 ft. is a must. Other skills/experiences which are desirable, but not necessary, include some first aid/CPR training and a background in the natural sciences.

We are looking for volunteers who will work one or several days during the summer. For instance a full week, one day a week for a month, etc. Free camping in Yankee Boy area will be provided for those who want to work consecutive days.

The volunteer season runs from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. Hosts will receive an orientation packet in the mail 1 week prior to their service date. Magnetic “Alpine Host” signs for vehicles, volunteer vests, literature, and other useful materials will be provided.
